How Google AdSense Works: From Application to First Payment

Google AdSense is the most widely used ad program for small and medium websites. It is free to join, works with almost any site platform, and gives you access to a huge pool of advertisers. Understanding each stage of the process helps you avoid delays and surprises.

Step 1: Create an account

You sign up with a Google account, enter your website address and your country, and accept the program terms. The name on the account should match the name on the bank account where you want to receive payments, because changing it later can be difficult.

Step 2: Connect your site

AdSense gives you a short piece of code to place inside the <head> section of your pages. On WordPress this is usually done with a header plugin, your theme settings or a site kit plugin. The code lets Google confirm that you control the site and later lets it show ads.

Step 3: Site review

Google reviews your site to check that it follows the AdSense program policies. The review can take anything from a few days to a few weeks. Reviewers look for original, useful content, a clear structure, and pages that comply with policy. If the site is not ready, you receive a message explaining the general reason, and you can fix the issues and request another review.

Step 4: Choose how ads appear

Once approved, you can use Auto ads, which let Google decide where and how many ads to show, or place ad units manually. Many publishers start with Auto ads and then switch off formats they do not like, such as certain anchor or vignette ads. Manual units give you more control over layout and are useful once you know which positions work for your readers.

Step 5: Add ads.txt

After approval, AdSense shows a warning if your site does not have an ads.txt file. This simple text file at the root of your domain declares that Google is authorized to sell your ad space. It protects you from counterfeit inventory and helps advertisers trust your site.

Step 6: Earnings and verification

Your estimated earnings appear in the dashboard within hours. When your balance reaches the verification threshold, Google asks you to verify your identity and, in many countries, mails a PIN to your postal address. You must enter this PIN in your account before payments can be issued.

Step 7: Getting paid

AdSense finalizes your earnings at the start of each month. If your finalized balance has reached the payment threshold (US$100 or its local equivalent in most countries) and there are no holds on your account, the payment is issued later that month. You can choose a payment method such as bank transfer, depending on what is available in your country, and you will need to complete your tax information.

Things that can delay payment

  • Unverified address or identity.
  • Missing tax information.
  • Payment details that do not match the account name.
  • Deductions for invalid traffic found during finalization.

Tips for a smooth experience

Keep your account information accurate, read the policy emails Google sends, and check the Policy center in your dashboard regularly. Most of all, protect your traffic quality. Never click your own ads, and avoid traffic sources that send visitors who do not read your content. A clean account history is worth more than any short-term boost in clicks.
