Direct Ad Sales: When and How to Sell Ads Yourself

Ad networks make monetization easy, but they keep a share of the revenue and decide which ads appear. As your site grows and builds a recognizable audience, selling some placements directly to advertisers can become an attractive addition.

When direct sales make sense

  • You have a focused niche with a clearly defined audience.
  • You receive steady monthly traffic and can show reliable statistics.
  • Brands in your niche already advertise online or sponsor creators.
  • You have time to find partners, negotiate and manage campaigns.

Types of direct deals

  • Display placements: a banner in a fixed position for a set period.
  • Sponsored articles: content written for or with a brand and clearly labeled as sponsored.
  • Newsletter sponsorships: a short message in your email newsletter.
  • Category sponsorships: a brand sponsors one section of your site.

Create a media kit

A simple media kit helps advertisers understand your value. Include your audience size, main countries, device split, popular topics, available placements, example layouts and prices or a request-for-quote option. Keep the numbers honest and up to date.

Pricing

Many publishers price display placements on a CPM basis or as a flat monthly fee. Start by looking at what you earn from networks in the same position, then add a premium for exclusivity and the work involved. Sponsored articles are usually priced per piece, reflecting both your audience and the effort of writing.

What to include in an agreement

  1. Placement, size and duration.
  2. Price, payment terms and currency.
  3. Reporting: what statistics you will provide and when.
  4. Content rules and your right to refuse ads that do not fit your site.
  5. Labeling requirements for sponsored content.
  6. Cancellation terms.

Disclosure and trust

Sponsored content must be clearly labeled. Many jurisdictions require it, and readers deserve to know when content is paid for. Search engines also expect paid links to be marked with appropriate attributes such as rel="sponsored".

Combine with networks

Direct sales rarely replace networks completely. A common approach is to sell a few premium placements directly and let networks fill the rest. If you run your own ad server, you can prioritize direct campaigns and use network demand as a backfill.

Keep your ads.txt accurate

Direct deals served from your own site do not always require ads.txt changes, but if a partner sells through an ad system, add the exact lines they provide.

Start small

Begin with one or two partners whose products genuinely fit your audience. A successful first campaign gives you a case study for the next one and helps you refine your pricing.
