Ad Viewability: What It Means and Why Advertisers Care
Advertisers increasingly pay for ads that are actually seen. Viewability measures whether an ad had a real chance to be noticed by a visitor. Improving it can lift your earnings without increasing the number of ads on the page.
How viewability is measured
The common industry standard says a display ad is viewable when at least 50% of its pixels are on screen for at least one continuous second. For video ads, at least 50% of the player must be visible for two continuous seconds. Larger display ads sometimes have a stricter rule. Your ad network measures this automatically and reports a viewability percentage, often called Active View in Google products.
What is a good rate?
Many advertisers aim for viewability above 50% to 70%, depending on the campaign. Your average will vary by placement. Units at the very bottom of long pages often score poorly, while units near the top of the content or in sticky positions score well.
Why it affects your revenue
Buyers optimize their campaigns over time. If a site’s ads are rarely viewable, automated bidding systems learn to bid less for that inventory. High viewability signals quality, which attracts better bids and more brand campaigns.
Ways to improve viewability
- Place ads where readers look. In-content positions after the introduction and between sections perform better than ads at the edges of the page.
- Lazy-load lower units. Requesting an ad only when the reader approaches it means impressions are counted when someone is actually there.
- Use sticky units carefully. A single sticky sidebar on desktop or a small anchor on mobile can deliver very high viewability.
- Improve page speed. If ads load after the reader has scrolled past, they will not be viewable.
- Remove weak units. A unit with very low viewability may pull down your average and add little revenue. Test removing it.
- Match ad sizes to the layout. Responsive units that fit the content width are more likely to be fully visible.
Do not chase the number blindly
It is possible to achieve high viewability with intrusive formats that annoy readers. That defeats the purpose. The best approach is to design pages where content and ads coexist naturally, so visitors stay longer and see ads as part of a pleasant reading experience.
Review it regularly
Check viewability by ad unit and by device every month. Mobile and desktop often behave very differently. Combine viewability with RPM and engagement metrics to decide which placements to keep, move or remove.
